For all you know that the file can be an unknown virus, spyware or a Trojan just waiting to cause damage to your computer. Again, this could be a normal operating system files.
Before taking any risk, you can run a check with the base whatisthatfile.com and see if the file is actually safe or simply not waiting to happen. Whatisthatfile has a simple interface and easy to use. Just type the name of unknown file in the search box and results will be posted immediately as you type. For example, I typed the filename hpqtra081.exe, I know what the file is, but we want to see if it returns an accurate description. Indeed, Whatisthatfile identified the source of the file as a printer driver Hewlett Packard.
Although the description was brief (he gave me an idea of this record was, which allowed me to visit the HP website and search their site for more information) further research for file types not produce more information: Whatisthatfile also gives you the opportunity to update or correct information on a file by clicking Edit this right (which must be approved by the site before the change), or add a new file in their database if nothing if found.
Although whatisthatfile.com has been around for several years, it should be used as part of your research trying to identify unknown files. Remember, when identifing files you do not recognize, your search should always take you to the vendor’s website if it is a valid file. If not, it’s a good sign, there may be a virus or spyware on your computer
